Construction is still often viewed as rough, muddy, and male-dominated. However, in reality, it is a sector where women can lead, innovate, and shape sustainable cities. This mini course aims to highlight women’s contributions to sustainable construction practices and raise awareness about their role in promoting sustainability within the industry. It offers practical tools to encourage women to take a role in sustainable construction practices on green sites, building a Green Career by identifying sustainable on-site practices and understanding their impact on personal career development.

1.2. Why is THIS Specific Focus Critical for Women in Construction? 

Breaking stereotypes — Women have the capacity to assume leadership roles in sustainability, offering distinct perspectives and creative solutions to environmental challenges. Their participation can lead to significant change and promote a more sustainable construction pratices. 

Choice & Confidence — The growing demand for green skills presents exciting opportunities for career advancement, enabling individuals to enhance their professional prospects in an increasingly eco-conscious job market.

Providing Tangible Career Goals — introducing specific job titles in the green career sector, linking them to Topic 2, which covers sectors and roles in the sustainability field, as well as Topic 3, which addresses the skills and qualifications necessary for green careers, career planning, inclusion, and lifelong learning from Module 4 on R1. The focus is on providing achievable career identities from the beginning of vocational education and training (VET) journey.

1.3. Distinguishing Feature from R1 Core Modules:

R1 Core Module 4 introduces the foundations of Sustainable and Green Building by covering practices, technologies, and gender-sensitive collaboration that link environmental responsibility with social equity. However, this mini-course takes a different approach. Instead of focusing exclusively on what sustainable construction demands, it explores who you can become by applying these practices. Learners are encouraged to engage in self-reflection: Do I enjoy this? Can I see myself on a construction site? They then discover what a career in this field looks like on a day-to-day basis. This mini-course offers a specialized “deep dive” into career exploration and personal branding. Rather than just demonstrating how to use tools or apply methods, it highlights the careers associated with these skills and illustrates the potential career paths. 

In summary, this course provides a practical, career-focused application that goes beyond the fundamental knowledge provided in the general R1 curriculum, empowering learners to connect sustainable construction to their own future roles.
