We all know the construction industry is in the middle of a massive transformation. It’s becoming more digital, more sustainable, and more innovative every single day. But a crucial question remains: is construction education keeping up?
As the core mission of the ConstructHer Future (CoHer) project, our first major task was to find an honest answer to that question. Our international team, with partners from across Europe, conducted a deep-dive analysis of existing Vocational Education and Training (VET) curricula in the construction sector. We poured over course syllabi, module descriptions, and learning objectives. Our goal was to see what’s working, what’s not, and most importantly, where the critical gaps are—especially for young women who are considering a future in the industry but don’t see a place for themselves.
What we found was both insightful and challenging. While many programs provide a solid technical foundation, we uncovered four main problem areas that demonstrate a clear and urgent need for a total remodel of how we teach construction.
Main Problem 1: The “Invisible Woman” and Ingrained Biases
One of the most immediate and consistent findings was the near-total invisibility of women in the very materials used to teach. From textbooks to presentation slides and case studies, the narrative of construction is overwhelmingly presented as a male endeavor.
The issue goes beyond just a lack of pictures. We found gendered language woven into the fabric of the content, with terms like “foreman,” “craftsman,” and the constant use of “he/his” as the default pronoun for any role of authority or skill. This creates an environment that can feel alienating and exclusionary. When young women don’t see anyone who looks like them leading projects, designing with innovative technology, or succeeding in technical roles, it sends a powerful, if unintentional, message: “You don’t belong here.” This reinforces outdated stereotypes and actively discourages a massive pool of talent from even considering the field.
To fix this, the CoHer curriculum is built on a principle of making women visible. Our new modules will actively and intentionally showcase successful women as leaders, technicians, digital innovators, and sustainability experts. We are committed to using inclusive, gender-neutral language and creating case studies that reflect the diverse, collaborative reality of a modern, successful construction team.
Main Problem 2: An Incomplete Toolbox for Real-World Success
Current curricula are generally effective at teaching the “what”—the technical skills needed to perform a specific task. However, they often fail to teach the “how”—the holistic skills needed to navigate a complex professional environment, build a career, and thrive.
We discovered a significant deficit in the integration of crucial competencies that employers consistently say they need. Skills like leadership, assertive communication, effective negotiation, and collaborative problem-solving are not “soft skills” to be learned on the side; they are essential professional skills for career advancement. Without them, even the most technically proficient graduate can struggle to lead a team, voice a brilliant idea in a meeting, manage conflict, or advance into management roles. This gap disproportionately affects women, who often have to be more deliberate and skilled in their communication to ensure their expertise is recognized in male-dominated settings.
The CoHer solution is to build a complete toolbox for every student. Our reformed curriculum integrates these holistic skills directly into technical modules, showing how communication is key to safety and how teamwork is essential for digital workflows. We are also developing specialized mini-courses focused specifically on empowerment, leadership, and confident communication to ensure every graduate is ready not just to do the job, but to lead.
Main Problem 3: Teaching for Yesterday’s Industry, Not Tomorrow’s
While some programs have started to incorporate digital tools, many are lagging significantly behind the rapid pace of change happening on real construction sites. The curriculum often feels like it’s preparing students for an industry that existed five or ten years ago.
The future of construction is undeniably digital and green. Modern projects rely on Building Information Modeling (BIM), collaborative cloud platforms, and data-driven decisions. Sustainability is no longer a niche interest but a core business requirement, driving innovation in materials and methods. Curricula that only offer a basic introduction to CAD or mention “green building” as a single, isolated chapter are failing to prepare graduates for the jobs that are in high demand right now and will be even more critical in the years to come.
Our approach is unapologetically future-focused. Digitalization and sustainability are not afterthoughts in the CoHer curriculum; they are central, cross-cutting themes. We are teaching the collaborative digital workflows that reduce errors and improve teamwork. We are integrating principles of sustainable design and green materials into core technical modules. We are preparing students for the high-tech, environmentally conscious, and efficient industry they will actually be joining.
Main Problem 4: A Rigid, “One-Size-Fits-All” Approach to Learning
Finally, our analysis revealed that the way content is delivered is often as outdated as the content itself. Many programs still rely heavily on a traditional, rigid structure of classroom lectures followed by standardized exams.
This “one-size-fits-all” approach doesn’t work for everyone. Today’s learners have diverse needs, backgrounds, and learning styles. A rigid structure can be disengaging and create significant barriers for students who excel with hands-on, collaborative, or project-based learning. Furthermore, traditional assessment methods are often not designed to be fully inclusive or to measure practical, real-world competence effectively.
To address this, the CoHer curriculum is being designed for inclusivity and accessibility from the ground up. Our framework is built on the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), encouraging a variety of teaching methods, from interactive workshops to online simulations. We are creating content in multiple formats—including video, text, audio guides, and podcasts—and promoting flexible, performance-based assessments that allow every learner to demonstrate their skills in an authentic way.
What’s Next? From Analysis to Action
Identifying these problems was the first, crucial step. Now, the real work of building the solution is underway. The findings from this pan-European curriculum analysis serve as the direct blueprint for the new Core Modules and Specialized Mini-Courses that our CoHer partners are currently developing. By directly addressing these four key areas, we are not just updating a curriculum; we are building a new, stronger foundation for a more equitable, modern, and successful construction industry for everyone.
