Trainer Explains Design Canvas

A Training Design Canvas is a structured tool to plan a session. Typical elements include:

Canvas Element

Key Questions

Target Audience

Who are your learners? What is their background?

Learning Objectives

What should participants know or be able to do after the session? (SMART goals)

Content / Topics

What key topics will you cover?

Activities / Methods

How will participants learn? (discussions, exercises, case studies)

Duration / Timing

How long will each section take?

Materials / Resources

What tools, handouts, or equipment are needed?

Assessment / Feedback

How will you check learning or gather feedback?

SMART Goals Recap

SMART Goals are:

  • Specific – Clear and precise

  • Measurable – You can assess if it’s achieved

  • Achievable – Realistic for the session and learners

  • Relevant – Connected to learners’ needs or objectives

  • Time-bound – Achievable within a set timeframe

Example:

By the end of the session, participants will identify three key leadership styles and give an example of each in a construction project.

Example Context

SMART Objective

Construction Leadership

By the end of the session, participants will identify 3 leadership styles used on construction sites and give one real-life example of each.

Safety Training

Within 30 minutes, participants will list 5 key safety behaviors and explain why each prevents accidents.

Communication Skills

By session end, participants will demonstrate active listening in a 5-minute role-play exercise with peers.

Team Management

During the workshop, participants will create a mini-team action plan for resolving a scheduling conflict and present it to the group.

Time Management

By the end of the training, participants will prioritize 3 tasks from a case study according to urgency and impact.

Tip: Each SMART objective should start with an action verb (identify, demonstrate, create, explain, prioritize) and be observable or measurable.
